A Deeply Personal AAPI Heritage Month: Journey from the Philippines to Freedom and Acceptance

May marks Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a celebration of the culture, traditions, and history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. As a middle-aged, first-generation Filipino immigrant, my journey to the U.S. was not just about chasing the American Dream—it was a quest for freedom, acceptance, and the opportunity to live authentically as a member of the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC community.

Roots and Backdrop

Growing up in the Philippines, a country known for its rich culture, tight-knit family structures and conservative perspectives, I was deeply rooted in tradition. However, these traditions sometimes came with stringent societal norms that often did not leave room for individuality, especially concerning sexual orientation and gender identity. As a young adult yearning to find my own identity and voice, I realized early on that my aspirations and my true self might not fully bloom in the environment I was in.

A Journey Across Continents

My journey to self-discovery took me across different places—from Southeast Asia to the Middle East and finally to America. Each destination was a chapter of learning and unlearning. I soaked in various cultures, met diverse people, and experienced the world in ways that made me appreciate the beauty in uniqueness and intricacies. This exposure was pivotal. It broadened my perspectives and reshaped my understanding of what it means to be truly authentic, free and accountable.

Settling in the U.S.: A New Beginning

Settling in the new country was both deliberate and serendipitous. This nation’s promise of freedom and pursuit of happiness resonated with my deepest desires—to live openly as a gay man embracing my truest self and a professional without fear of discrimination or prejudice. The diversity and inclusivity I found here, particularly in the professional landscape, were in stark contrast to the sometimes-repressive norms I had known and experienced.

Embracing Identity During AAPI Heritage Month

AAPI Heritage Month is profoundly personal to me. It is not only a celebration of where I come from but also a celebration of the growth that has been possible in my newfound home. It is a time to reflect on the history of Asians and Pacific Islanders in America—a history marked by struggle, resilience, and immense contributions to the society.

On a profoundly personal level, it is a reminder of my journey from an uncertain young boy in the Philippines to a proud, openly gay person now, happily doing his best to be the best version of himself everyday. It underscores the importance of diversity, the beauty of heritage, and the ongoing struggle for equality.

As we celebrate this month, let us remember the stories of millions of AAPI individuals who contribute daily to the fabric of American society, continually enriching it with the traditions and values we bring. This month, as every month, I am reminded of the liberty to be myself, and for that, I am endlessly grateful.
